課程概述 |
Course Description:
This course is designed to foster the understanding of European drama and theatrical culture(s) from antiquity to the twentieth century. Students will learn the necessary analytical skills for close reading as well as the knowledge of theatrical developments, generic fashion, and theatre practice. The course will follow a chronological model, beginning with Greek tragedy and concluding with modern drama. Six subgenres of drama from the classical period, the Renaissance, the Jacobean period, the Restoration, the eighteenth century, as well as the twentieth century are selected to ensure that students be equipped with fundamental knowledge about theatre across historical, ideological and technical divides.

Course Objectives:
Students will learn knowledge concerning
1. Major developments of theatre from antiquity to modernity
2. Structure of playhouses: Greek amphitheater, the Globe, the proscenium stage, the yard, and the pit.
3. The dynamic culture of theatre and the printing houses. Formats of drama publication. Folios, quartos, and octavos.
4. Performance history.
5. Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism, Expressionism, and Epic Theatre.
